What is a SIP trunk and what can it do for your organisation?

Calling over the internet is nothing new. But the technology behind it is still a black box for many organisations. SIP trunks are the digital connections that carry all your business calls. Scalable, reliable, and far more flexible than the physical phone lines of the past. Sound of Data has been delivering them for years, and has recently expanded that offering: our SIP trunks are now officially certified for the Yeastar platform.

What is a SIP trunk?

SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol, the communication standard used to initiate, manage, and terminate phone calls over the internet. A SIP trunk is the digital connection between your telephony platform and the public telephone network. No cables, no physical hardware. Just a reliable, scalable line over the internet.

Think of it as the digital motorway that carries all your business calls. Inbound, outbound, internal. Everything runs over it.

What does it deliver for your organisation?

Still using traditional phone lines? Then you’re probably leaving money on the table. SIP trunks are significantly cheaper, especially at high volumes or for international calls. But the benefits go beyond cost alone.

No expensive hardware required. You scale up and down quickly, internationally too. Calls run over a redundant platform that is monitored 24/7, meaning quality and reliability are structurally higher than with traditional lines. And your existing soft- and hardware? No need to touch it. SIP trunks integrate with what you already have.

In short: lower costs, more control, and an infrastructure that grows with you.

Not every SIP trunk is equal

This is where it gets interesting. Not every SIP trunk provider is automatically compatible with every telephony platform. Platforms like Yeastar build their systems on specific technical standards. If your SIP trunk does not connect seamlessly, problems arise: poor audio quality, dropped calls, or integrations that simply do not work.

That is why SIP Trunk certification exists. A rigorous testing process that proves a provider’s SIP trunk is fully compatible with a specific platform. Not on paper, but tested and approved in practice.

Sound of Data has achieved that certification for Yeastar.

Sound of Data is now SIP Trunk certified for Yeastar

That is no small step. It means organisations working with the Yeastar platform can now use Sound of Data’s SIP trunks, with the assurance that everything works as it should. Guaranteed compatibility. No surprises.

Yeastar is a leading provider of business communication solutions, with products ranging from IP-PBX systems to cloud telephony. Their platform is used worldwide by thousands of organisations, from SME to enterprise. Combining that with Sound of Data’s SIP trunks is a logical step: two specialists, each strong in their own domain, together offering a more complete picture.

For end users, this translates directly. Organisations already working with Yeastar can now easily connect to Sound of Data’s SIP trunks. And those already with Sound of Data gain a certified platform in Yeastar.

Why this matters

Telephony solutions are becoming increasingly complex. More integrations, more channels, higher expectations around availability and quality. In that world, reliability carries significant weight. A certified partnership is not a marketing term, it is a technical guarantee.

Sound of Data has always prioritised quality over quantity when it comes to partnerships. Not every collaboration is worth pursuing. But Yeastar is. A strong platform, broad applicability, and a shared focus on stable, professional communication.

We look forward to what we can achieve together.
